(New York, New York)—The American Folk Art Museum (2 Lincoln Sq., Columbus Ave. at W. 65th St.) announced today that it will be open six days a week beginning Tuesday, November 8, 2022. The American Folk Art Museum’s (AFAM) public hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m from Tuesday to Sunday through January 29, 2023.

“We are proud to be one of New York City’s free museums and a part of the vibrant cultural offerings on the Upper West Side,” said Chris Gorman, Chief Communications Officer. “Our new hours will mean there is an additional day per week to see Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered, which is on pace to be one of the Museum’s most popular exhibitions.”

The new schedule coincides with the launch of the Museum’s holiday decorations and offerings in the AFAM Shop, and a selection of new and ongoing in-person and virtual programs.

Exhibitions

Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered is the first retrospective devoted to Hirshfield in nearly 80 years and presents the full range of the self-taught painter’s intricate brushwork, visual dazzle, and radical departures from realism. The exhibition has been the recipient of positive appraisals in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The New Yorker.

Pushing Boundaries: Six Decades of Exhibitions features key works by artists including William Edmondson and Sister Gertrude Morgan, and rarely seen documents from the Museum’s archives. Each object on view is representative of a key exhibition from AFAM’s six-decade history as New York City’s only museum devoted to folk and self-taught artists.

Holiday Shopping

The Museum Shop is fully stocked with charming ornaments, beautiful greeting cards, and crowd-pleasing decorations. Explore hand-picked, meaningful, and unique gifts for all ages and occasions, and books such as The Master of the Two-Left Meet: Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered.

Programs

Twice a month through January, enjoy jazz standards from the American Songbook with guitarist Bill Wurtzel and Jay Leonhart. On December 15, the Museum’s Dialogue + Studio Workshop continues with Ornamental Figures: Paper-Cutting with Ruby Sky Stiler. The Museum is also offering tours of Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered for adult and school groups, including Polish-language exhibition tours and a family program. For more information, please visit the AFAM website.

In addition to the above activities, the Museum virtual programs series continues.
