It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Robert L. Hirschhorn, a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Folk Art Museum (AFAM) from 2002 to 2011. Together with his wife, Marjorie, Robert had the pre-eminent collection of American marquetry, a decorative technique of ornamenting furniture or personal objects with intricate patterns from cut pieces of wood. The collection was exhibited at the American Folk Art Museum, and it was the subject of a book, created in collaboration with Richard Mühlberger in 1998, titled American Folk Marquetry: Masterpieces in Wood. Hirschhorn’s generous gifts to AFAM include a Statue of Liberty cabinet by Titus Albrecht, among other works. Our sympathies are extended to Marjorie, his extended family, and many friends.
