The American Folk Art Museum lost a dear friend and adviser on January 8, 2018, when former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities Bruce Cole passed away. Cole was the longest-serving NEH Chairman (2001–2009), and under his leadership the NEH launched key initiatives, including Picturing America, which used American art to teach the country’s history and culture in public schools and libraries nationwide. He expanded digital projects at the NEH, as well as developed partnerships with China, Mexico, and other foreign countries. Cole was a distinguished art historian and professor, as well as the author of fourteen books. We extend our sympathies to his wife, Doreen, his family and friends, and all who benefitted, as AFAM did, from his wisdom and scholarship.
