Dear Friend,
Fall greetings from the American Folk Art Museum!
I hope you were able to see our most recent exhibitions, What That Quilt Knows About Me and Material Witness: Folk and Self-Taught Artists at Work, which concluded at the end of October.
While our galleries at 2 Lincoln Square are currently closed, we hope you will return on November 15th for Unnamed Figures: Black Presence and Absence in the Early American North and Marvels of My Own Inventiveness. Both of these exhibitions have been the subject of buzzworthy attention, including mentions of Unnamed Figures in The New York Times, Essence, The New Yorker, and Smithsonian Magazine. Timed with the exhibition, the Museum has also published a new book, which is available from the Museum Shop and features contributions from over ten authors.
On Friday, October 27, we hosted the AFAM Gala at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers. It was a wonderful time celebrating our honorees Joyce Cowin, Dr. Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw, and the William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation. Please find a selection of images from this amazing event here.
We are honored that three arts organizations across the United States are currently presenting exhibitions from the Museum. Read more about our traveling shows via our website and learn how you can see works from the AFAM collection in California, Arkansas, and Washington D.C.
Last but not least, I am thrilled to share that the Museum’s Board of Trustees has elected Lybra Clemons and Jolie Altman to join us in shaping the next chapter of AFAM. Please read more about these accomplished individuals via the Museum’s announcement of their election.
I look forward to seeing you soon at the Museum!
In gratitude –
