Join us for an exploration of the work of French sculptor Auguste Forestier, whose work is currently on view in Francesc Tosquelles: Avant-Garde Psychiatry and the Birth of Art Brut. While living at the Saint-Alban psychiatric hospital, he created handmade tools and materials; discarded pieces of wood, foil wrapping, string, metal wires, and butcher’s bones that were set aside, then shaped into decorative elements, and later assembled to form “toys” and sculptures representing soldiers, beasts, houses, and portraits in relief.
Families will learn about Forestier’s sculpture, then create their own piece that can also function as a toy!
Families and Folk Art introduces children ages 4 to 12 and their accompanying adults to folk art through interactive discussion followed by hands-on artmaking activities inspired by objects in the museum.
