In 2010, he became art director of Bluroc Records, designing and illustrating album covers including the iconic Pilot Talk<\/em> trilogy for the rapper Curren$y. In 2015, as a designer with Noble Signs, he has worked with clients including Pentagram, Gensler, the Art Students League, Whitney Museum, Lawrence Wiener, Yoko Ono, Afropunk, BMW\/Mini, Opening Ceremony, Marlow & Sons, and more. He has been featured in The New York Times, T Magazine, Brooklyn Magazine, Complex Magazine, Mass Appeal, The Daily News,<\/em> among other publications.<\/p>\n Mac Pohanka<\/strong> (b. 1986, Northampton, MA) is a gilder, fabricator and designer. Since 2013, he has been the co-owner of Noble Signs. He started his work in painted finishes and fabrication in high school, working for his father John Pohanka, a fine furniture maker in New England. Graduating in 2008 from Grinnell College with a BA in American Studies, Pohanka moved to New York and studied gilding at the decorative hardware studio Van Gregory and Norton. Soon after he began working as a production designer and prop fabricator in film. During this time he produced work for Bjork, Encyclopedia Picture, IKEA, Fisher Price and many others. Teaching artist Elena Kanagy-Loux<\/strong><\/a> will lead a discussion about the history of lacemaking using examples found in nineteenth\u00a0century portraits featured in the exhibition American Perspectives<\/em><\/a>, followed by a workshop in which students will learn to wind bobbins, set up their pillow, and work the foundational stitch of bobbin lace, known as cloth stitch or linen stitch, to create a little sampler in cotton thread. Upon returning to New York City, she cofounded the Brooklyn Lace Guild, and began teaching bobbin lace classes at the Textile Arts Center. She recently completed her MA in Costume Studies at NYU, where she wrote her thesis on modern lacemaking culture. Inspired by exhibition artists Alo\u00efse Corbaz and James Castle, who used the natural materials available to them to create their work, participants in this workshop will be introduced to the natural colors of foraged mineral pigments and botanical lake pigments. Teaching artist Natalie Stopka<\/strong><\/a> will share a hands-on demo of pigment grinding and paint mixing with a soy binder, focusing on a selection of lake pigments from her studio garden. Students will then use the handmade paints to create their own works on paper. All materials are provided. The program is limited to 20 individuals.<\/p>\n Natalie Stopka<\/strong> is a New York based textile artist and educator focused on historical surface patterning techniques including natural dyeing, marbling, and pigment extraction. She received her BFA in\u00a0Fashion Design and Art\u00a0History from Columbia College in Chicago. She has worked as a designer and textile\u00a0instructor, specializing in weaving, embroidery, and bobbin lace in New York for more than eight years. She is the co-founder of\u00a0the Brooklyn Lace Guild<\/a>. She is currently working to complete a lace-making degree from the Centre d\u2019Enseignement de la Dentelle au Fuseau in Le Puy-en-Velay, France, and has completed professional needlework courses at the\u00a0Royal School of Needlework in the United Kingdom. She cofounded and ran a cooperative wood shop in Brooklyn from 2001 to 2012. She taught for several years at the Craft Students League in New York City, and currently teaches woodworking classes at Makeville Studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Influenced by this, her work meditates on representation, identity constructions, gender roles, migration, and nature from a personal place, but also through larger transcultural and historical frames. She graduated from the Escuela Nacional de Artes Visuales (ENAV) in Santo Domingo in 2009, the Altos de Chav\u00f3n School of Design in La Romana in 2011, and Parsons the New School for Design in New York in 2013. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2013.\u00a0Minaya is the recipient of Emerging Artist Awards from the Rema Hort Mann Foundation (2016) and the Joan Mitchell Foundation (2015), a Great Prize and the Audience Award in the XXV Concurso de Arte Eduardo Le\u00f3n Jimenes at the Centro Le\u00f3n in Santiago, and the Great Prize of the XXVII National Biennial of the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo.
